MYGALAXI GALLERY ARCHIVE SITE
This is a copy of the website for Mygalaxi Gallery. Mygalaxi was run by Arlo Edwards from early 2010 to late 2011 in the basement of 39 Dixon St, Wellington CBD. It hosted art exhibitions, musical performances, Comix festivals, film evenings, seances, ghost hunts, book launches, theatrical plays, weekend art markets, and other things that defy categorisation. While it existed it earned the title of one of Wellington's coolest venues, as many will testify.
Note: not all of the links here lead to current sites or pages, but as this is an archive I've left them as they were. The Facebook photo albums are still alive, though, so there are plenty more photos of Mygalaxi to view. |

MORE old NEWS:
Arlo & James and the many loyal and talented people who have held stalls in the six MYGALAXI Art Markets in 2010 would like to wish Claire Harris a huge Thank You for all her hard work in getting the market established and running each time. Claire volunteered her time and effort to this project with a finite time limit of the end of 2010, and she certainly delivered. |
HISTORY:
Rediscovered in April 2009, the rooms under 39 Dixon Street had suffered decades of misuse as a junk depositry for businesses located on the floors above. Despite leaky pipes and no electricity, the atmosphere was surpringly not damp or musty. Three large skiploads of junk were removed.
Further, there seemed to be a presence of some kind. The team from Strange Occurrences investigated, and this was covered by TV3's Nightline news programme - video clip September 2009 [general link to TV3 only].
The investigation is ongoing.
A while ago, Mongrel Mob prospects had broken in and made the place into Party Central. The grafitti was their doing. There is also a rumour that the rooms were used as some kind of church. Any further information to substantiate this would be appreciated.

Some Waimapihi history - Vicino site Te Aro Pa history - www.wcl.govt.nz Way before that, before reclamation, when the shoreline was much closer, the area was the centre of Te Aro Pa. Te Aro Park (formerly Pigeon Park, just across Dixon St) commemorates that history of the land. The Waimapihi Stream, which ran from the valley at the top of Holloway Road, used widen out and prepare to enter Wellington Harbour - Te Whanganui a Tara - right where the public toilets are now located. The Waimapihi Stream was piped in the 19th century and still runs close to 39 Dixon St. Perhaps it is this history and the presence of the stream that gives Mygalaxi its unusual energy and atmosphere.

Performance art meets teenage sleep over and fan devotion in Happy Birthday Lindsay Lohan at MYGALAXI Gallery, 1-2 July.
In honour of former child actress and toxic starlet Lindsay Lohan’s 25th birthday, Wellington based artist Claire Harris will watch all of Lohan’s films in a 25 hour and 15 minute long live performance art work. Reworking expected elements of performance art, such as duration, endurance and repetition into an act of fan homage reminiscent of the teen girl ritual of the sleep over movie marathon, the artist aims to create a surfeit of goodwill and positive attention towards Lindsay Lohan. Please join the artist in creating this birthday present for Lindsay Lohan by dropping in to watch some films, completing your own tribute to Ms. Lohan, or by thinking kindly of her on this day. Happy Birthday Lindsay Lohan opens at 5.30pm Friday 1 July. The performance begins at 6.45pm and will conclude around 8.00pm on Saturday 2 July, finishing with a closing party/birthday party for Lindsay Lohan. |
The Seance was a theatrical event by mentalist Robert Haley. Two sold-out performances took place on the night of Friday 13th May 2011. Unknown presences may have interferred with the running of both seances - see Capital Times article [link dead]. Perhaps it's time for another Strange Occurrences investigation.

Review by Mark Amery:
"Two of my favourite Wellington group exhibitions this year have been cases in point, both reveling like Parade in finding new ways of working rather than following a set of preordained rules for exhibition presentation. Monsters at new underground venue Mygalaxi in Dixon Street was a rich, bright and anarchic assemblage of strange eye-popping creatures, programmed neatly as a lead up to Halloween. Created by a host of local artists who rarely get shown in public galleries, the amount of talent and ingenuity on display was impressive."

Roger Morris exhibition: The Failure of Imagination
Opened September 11th 2010 Exhibition photos on FBk www.911artists.com - Artists for 9/11 truth "A case in point is a current survey show of the work of painter and assemblage artist Roger Morris. Opened to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11, Edwards has curated a large sprawling show that picks out from Morris's body of work a raw pop-expressionistic response to American military imperialism over more than a decade. Like an inverted bunker war room, where the artist instead stages a public response on behalf of a muted populace (represented by powerful wallpapered prints of monochromatic tool-headed figures), it includes overly-polemic defences of the Twin Towers conspiracy theory."
